Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte expressed his frustration with his own performance following a 1-1 draw with Twente in their Europa League debut.
United took the lead through Christian Eriksen’s fine first-half finish but the 32-year-old midfielder undid his good work in the second half, clumsily losing possession in a dangerous position to gift Twente an equaliser through Sam Lammers.
Bruno Fernandes came close to finding the winner with a curling effort over the crossbar in the 81st minute before Kobbie Mainoo had a penalty shout waved away.
The result continues Unitded’s stuttering start to the campaign, with the result meaning the Red Devils have won just three of their opening seven games in all competitions.
Wednesday’s fixture at Old Trafford did see summer signing Ugarte play a full 90 minutes for the first time since joining from Paris Saint-Germain.
However, the Uruguayan was not best pleased with his own performance and promised fans after the game he would endeavour to improve.
‘I’m the first to make self-criticism,’ Ugarte wrote on Instagram. ‘It wasn’t a great match personally. We have to keep working.’
Speaking at full-time, Erik ten Hag questioned his players’ mentality and said they must be more ruthless to kill of games.
‘They [Twente] fought for every yard and we didn’t and 99 percent is not enough, you have to give 100 percent.
‘You have to kill the game, you have to finish it off. You have to go for the second goal and then you kill the game.
‘We are very ambitious and when you have ambition you have to perform, prove the point. Especially today in the second half we were too complacent, we didn’t bring it over the line and as a team.
‘We have to be more clinical in such situations, but I don’t think that was the only problem tonight. We have to keep going in the second half. Be more consistent. Kill it off, get the second goal and the game is over.
‘We have across the frontline enough players who can score goals.’
